['lakʃmi], weibliche Gottheit Indiens, mit Wohlstand, Schönheit, Glück und Fruchtbarkeit assoziiert; im Hinduismus seit epischer Zeit (indische Literaturen) die Gattin v. a. Vishnus (als solche auch Shri genannt). Ihr Zeichen ist der Lotos (daher ihre Beinamen Kamala und Padma). In der Kunst wird sie meist auf einer Lotosblüte sitzend oder stehend mit einer Lotosblume in der Hand dargestellt; weitere Attribute: eine Frucht oder ein Töpfchen; auch als Gajalakshmi gestaltet. Lakshmi ist eine der populärsten Gottheiten im Hinduismus und erfährt besondere Verehrung beim herbstlichen Lichterfest Divali (Oktober/November); eigene Tempel sind ihr kaum geweiht. In stark untergeordneter Position ist Lakshmi im jainistischen sowie im buddhistischen Pantheon zu finden, im Tantrismus wird sie, wie auch Kali, als eine der zehn Göttinen (Mahavidyas) verehrt, in denen sich die grundlegende Urkraft (Shakti) manifestiert. Mit Narayana wird sie auch als Götterpaar dargestellt (Lakshminarayana).
